helping-you-make-decorating-decisionsNow that the sun has started shining, I’ve started to think about decorating and yes, judging by the number of people in my local hardware shop choosing paint, people are planning on getting the paint brushes and wallpaper paste out over St Patrick’s weekend.

Whether you are planning on changing the wall colour, just adding a few accessories or doing a total revamp of a room, knowing the interior design trends for 2017 will help you make your decisions. The good news is  many of them haven’t really altered that much since 2016 which suggests they won’t be changing drastically in the near future and we also have the research from Pinterest to prove it.

Wallpapers To Make Your Rooms Seem Bigger

I love houses with high ceilings, they give the illusion of so much more space within the room. Of course, high ceilings aren’t always practical – it’s going to cost more to heat rooms with high ceilings and simple tasks like changing light bulbs or reaching those cobwebs in the corners are a little more of a challenge.

I live in a 1970s house and the ceilings are placed at standard height but I do like using wallpapers that, while not in a  lined vertical stripe design, still provide the effect of making the walls seems longer. Here are some examples of wallpapers that will give your rooms a sense of more height and space.

Wallpapers to give your Rooms more height

Downstairs toilets or small bathrooms often need some help in making them feel more spacious and this one, with its narrow white stripes, is quite subtle.

This design has stripes of equal width, which while making the room appear higher, can also make it seem narrower – partly because it has made it easy to count the stripes within this narrow space.

What We Can Learn From Home Improvement TV Shows

Room to Improve is back on our TV screens every Sunday night. Now in its tenth series, it certainly has seen a number of changes over the years as Ireland went from boom to bust and back out again. Room to Improve doesn’t provide a quick makeover whereby single rooms are transformed by a team of people working frantically to get it done inside the deadline of a couple of days. Dermot Bannon transforms whole houses and it’s hugely interesting to see how a house can look so different, both inside and outside, when it is completed.

Programme 1: A renovation and extension in Malahide

Each programme follows a similar pattern. We travel with Dermot as he goes to meet the homeowners, as if he is seeing it for the first time too. Ideas, concepts, wish lists and budgets are discussed. As the work gets underway, conflict always crops up. The budget either has to be increased, or something highly desirable needs to be removed from the wish list. Alternatively, the home owners do something that Dermot isn’t happy with or he does something that the home owners hate. By the end of the programme though, tempers are resolved and it’s best friends all around. The home owners may have spent more but they love every inch of their new home, and Dermot is happy too.

One Man’s Trash is Another’s Treasure: Salvaging and Upcycling

There’s something very special about seeing salvaged or upcycled pieces in the home. Not only does the item have a new lease of life but it is often being used in a different way to which it was first intended. These pieces give homes personality and interest. In this post I’m going to share a few of my favourite Pinterest salvaged or upcycled finds, ending with some top tips on how to upcycle your own pieces.
