Kitchen Table, Kitchen Island or a Breakfast Bar?

Kitchen Table, Kitchen Island or a Breakfast Bar

Whether you are planning a completely new kitchen or you would like to update your existing one, adding a kitchen island or a breakfast bar in a complimentary material to your kitchen cabinets can work well for lots of reasons. If your kitchen cupboards are oak, for example, you might like to opt for the kitchen island to be painted but with an oak worktop. The trends in kitchens now are to use a mix of materials such as wood and stainless steel or painted units with a wooden kitchen island.

Kitchens aren’t just for cooking and eating now, they are a multi-functional room. Kitchens are the hub of the home, providing a space to prepare food and cook it. The formal dining rooms are fast disappearing so most kitchens are now large enough to accommodate a large table which doubles as a space for eating and a space for socialising and where children can do their homework. A kitchen island or breakfast bar are used for food preparation and for informal suppers, breakfasts and they also make the perfect perch for one person to sit and chat while the other is cooking. More families are opting for a little ‘snug’ area in the kitchen too if there is room, a space to sit comfortably with a cup of coffee and chat or read a book. This might be a small two-seater sofa, two cosy armchairs or a window seat.

Suppose you are wondering what works best: a kitchen table, a kitchen island or a breakfast bar? Well, here’s the pros and cons of each:-

How To Make Rooms Appear Taller

How To Make Rooms Appear Taller

Rooms with low ceilings can make rooms (be they large or small) seem much smaller. The low ceiling limits the sense of space and can make the room feel darker too. Conversely, rooms with high ceilings, even if the floor space isn’t as large as you might think, create a wonderful sense of space. Indeed, many halls in new builds have a double height ceiling which really opens the sense of space.

Of course, low ceilings have their advantages, the room seems cosier and is certainly easier to heat. If you want to create a cosy atmosphere in a television room or a den, a low ceiling is perfect but what if you’d like to create more of a sense of space? How do you make that ceiling appear higher?

Interview with Tradesman James Owens – Video

Hi folks,
here is an interview I did with James Owens at one of our workshops recently.  James is a qualified carpenter from Blanchardstown and has been getting a lot of positive feedback from users of Tradesmen.ie.  Sometimes the Internet can be a bit impersonal so it’s nice to be able to see one of the tradesmen in person on this video.  If you are a customer hopefully this interview will help you identify positive signals to look out for when hiring a professional tradesman.  If you are a tradesman, I hope this interview will give you a few tips and help you to see areas where you can improve your customer service and be more successful in the future.  You can see the interview below:-

Construction Work Safety in the Home

Construction Safety in the home
Hi folks,
in this article I want to talk about construction work safety and the responsibilities for homeowners in making sure that construction work is carried out safely in the home.  These responsibilities are covered under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013.  I would also encourage tradesmen to read this article and to check out the checklist at the bottom of this article and in the HSA Guide.  If you are a tradesman, try to ensure that you can answer ‘yes’ to the relevant questions in the checklist and that you carry a file with relevant certs and policies to support your claims.

Garden Tips for Autumn

garden tips for autumn

Hi folks,
this article is about garden tips for Autumn.  Well the weather in July and August was disagreeable this year but crops have been doing well and gardens are looking great!  Hopefully we’ll get some fine weather this Autumn so that we can enjoy sitting out in the garden and enjoy the fruits of our labour during the Summer, or the fruits of someone else’s labour as the case may be:-)

Well there is always lots to do in the garden.  If you have the time or the interest, it’s really a very satisfying hobby.  Some people can be put off as they think it’s a lot of work and they don’t know where to start.   However, keeping a garden doesn’t have to be a big job.  You can literally get started by planting a few flowers or vegetables in a window box or corner of the garden and progress from there year by year as you become more confident.

There are many gardening groups that you can join to get some more tips and keep you motivated:-)  Another approach is to do some of the smaller gardening tasks yourself and hire a local gardener for the big work of planting and digging, to keep an eye out for, and spray for pests and diseases.  He/she can recommend a weekly spray program if you wish to do the spraying yourself.  Anyway, enough of the introduction, let’s get started, here is a list of the Autumn jobs and tips for the garden below, hope you enjoy reading through them:-
