You may wish to replace your windows or doors if they are drafty, damaged, outdated, or if if they are not up to the current building standards or let in noise from outside. Or you may just not like the look of your old windows:-)
With that in mind, recently we carried out a quick window and door prices survey with some window companies on Tradesmen.ie. They were asked to price 2 external pvc doors, front and back and 7 average size pvc windows. All windows to have a u-value* of 1.3. We also asked them for some tips on getting the best job done. Here are some of the replies we got below:-
Adrian from Galway: Your approximately looking at 11,500 inc vat. Replacing windows and doors to your home means you have to do work in every room of the house. This can be very disruptive for some clients. We try our best to cover all floors and furniture and leave the house as we found it. There is no easy way to do it. It will make a massive difference to your home retaining heat, windows are the second biggest contributor to heat loss with the roof be the highest.”
Anthony from Dublin: Roughly around €12000 for quality windows with the A rating I personally only use earth kind as their windows and doors are high quality.
Cillian from Wicklow: In terms of a window job with two doors white pvc, double glazing and standard openings, you would expect a starting price of about 6000 euro supply and fit. But I’d be guessing, in this crazy environment, a starting price would more than likely to be around 7.5 – 8000 euro.
Patrick from Cork: The following is my rough idea of window and door prices: (a) Standard pvc back door: 800.00. (b) Standard front door: 1,000.00 to 1,200.00. (c) 7 Average windows, around 350.00 each 2,450.00.
I find Leo West windows very good but the lead in time is around 6 to 8 weeks. Also Munster joinery are good two, lead in time is quicker, around 3 to 4 weeks
Aidan from Louth: A starting off price for 7 windows, pvc front door with 2 sidelights and a std back door would be in the region of €7,500 – €8,000. Prices can vary depending on styles, colours and if the doors were to be composite this would add at least 1k to each door. Tips for best job? ….. hire us !

Tips for hiring a tradesman
Here are some tips to consider when hiring a tradesman:-
1. Ask for phone numbers of references so that you can check them out
2. Check insurance of the tradesman where insurance is required
3. Hire a suitably qualified architect, building surveyor or building engineer if the job is anything to do with a new build, building renovation or extension
4. Agree on some sort of stage payments for the job. Remember that full payment should not be made until the job is complete and has been inspected by you, and if necessary by a certifier.
