House of the Future

As I was surfing the web, I stumbled upon something quite interesting, known as the home of the future. It seems that some intuitive and fresh thinking people are always coming up with ideas to help ease the way we live.

The thoughts of being able to control the entire house from one central area is just one of the many possibilities that will be among us sooner rather than later.

Although it will make a life easier and a lot more pleasant, something as technologically advanced as these systems won’t come cheap just yet. However, it is defiently something that a lot of people will be looking forward to see in the future and hopefully installed in their own future homes.

What do you think? Is the age of ‘The Jetsons’ almost among us?

If the House of the Future is not for you at present, you could revamp your own home and I’m sure there are plenty of tradesmen at Tradesmen.ie that would be more than happy to help you.

Check out this video here. This is one of my favourite examples of the home of the future brought to life. With this example, the possibilities are endless. There is a stove/cooker that can recommend a number of recipes, walls that have the ability to change colour and a rather cool large looking iPod table.

Here is another very good example . . .

Feel free to share and comment,

All the best,

Daniel Beere

Water Shortage, what to do . . .

Water Shortage, what to do

The rain has come but with all this nice weather that we’ve had lately there may be water shortages ahead this Summer. In the future our water will be metered so this might be a good chance to look at water conservation and how we can play our part to conserve water in our home or business. There are many techniques and devices to help conserve water, such as greywater reuse, for example here is a low tech example,

Water can be conserved by using water-conserving landscaping and irrigation practices, the installation of low-flow fixtures and appliances such as this one (here’s another job for the plumber 🙂

Water users can also conserve water through some common-sense strategies in the home. These are known as “Wise Water Use” methods and include taking shorter showers, taking baths instead of showers, running only full loads of laundry and dishes, and being prompt in repairing leaky plumbing.

Thank You

Hi Folks,

I just wanted to say a big thank you to all who supported us during the O2 Ideas Room competition. We are all delighted to have won and it really means a lot to us to know that people took the time out to vote for us. Cheers.

Since the announcement of the winner last Tuesday, Tradesmen.ie featured on a full page in The Irish Daily Star newspaper (Page 9, I think). The page consisted of a screenshot of our YouTube video with Daisy the Cow and of the Tradesmen.ie homepage, as well as stating that Tradesmen.ie had won the competition. We are due to receive some of the prize very shortly but until then we wait in anticipation.

More recently, today, we received a phone call from radio station Midlands 103 asking to interview our very own Oliver Dempsey about our achievement. Hopefully it all goes well and Oliver gives a cracking interview. We also did an amusing video at the weekend that we thought you all might enjoy. Have a look at it below and thanks again to all for the support.

Laois Company Wins O2 Award and €50,000 in Prizes

Laois company, Tradesmen.ie, was announced as the winners of the O2 Ideas Room Sales Pitch competition on Tuesday, 27th of July.

The O2 Idea’s Room ran a competition where they asked Irish companies to pitch their business idea in 140 characters or less via Twitter, SMS or on the O2 Idea’s Room Blog. Six finalists were chosen and people could then vote for their favorite business to win the grand prize of €50,000 worth of business support.

Oliver Dempsey, founder of Tradesmen.ie, entered the pitch “Want to save time and money on tradesmen and trade professional services? Get up to 4 quotes and compare prices on www.Tradesmen.ie”.

Fortunately for the Laois company, they were announced as winners as they gained the most amount of votes for their sales pitch. For those who are unfamiliar with the business,  Tradesmen.ie is a free Irish online service that helps you to find tradesmen and get a number of quotes for your job. All you need to do is to fill in a simple form which asks you to describe the type of job you need to do and what type of tradesman you are looking for. They locate and inform tradesmen in your area who are available and who are willing to quote for the job. The tradesmen are then asked to contact you and organise to give you a quote.

The Ballybrittas or more specifically Jamestown based company have been operating successfully for a number of years now and are hoping to build on the success of their recent victory in the O2 competition. During the campaign, Tradesmen.ie made use of online social media’s such as Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. They constantly updated fans of their progress on their Facebook page and made regular updates. As well as this, they also produced many videos to market their campaign on their Youtube channel Tradesmen1. These videos were made to reach out to people with the hope that each video would spread online and help create more votes for them. What was unique about these videos was that each of them was made with a good sense of humor as the company believed it was best to have fun and enjoy the opportunity of having the chance to win such a competition. Fortunately, it proved to be a major success and one of their videos with Daisy the cow has to this date over 4,100 views. Quite a success story for a small business which now has the chance grow bigger and help benefit customers, tradesmen and the Irish economy. Congratulations to Tradesmen.ie

Oliver answers on the recent success of Tradesmen.ie

Here’s a few words from Oliver Dempsey, founder of Tradesmen.ie, after his company was announced as the winner of the O2 Idea’s Room competition recently.

What tips or tricks did you employ to rally support for voting?

To rally support for voting we used a number of tactics. We used YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, our own Blog, Twitter, Google News, Yahoo News and a number of other online services. We placed articles, videos and appeals to ask people to vote for us if they liked what we were about. We tried everything we could think of and we were really just learning as we went along. The Internet is changing rapidly on a monthly basis and we find that what worked to sell our products and services 6 months ago isn’t the same now. You need to use a variety of tactics and see what works best for your business. Video accounts for a large proportion of Internet usage these days so we created funny videos that people could watch and enjoy and hopefully pass on to their friends if they liked them. The idea was to create very funny video content that could become viral and spread throughout the Internet. My own favourite was one we did with Daisy the cow. The idea was to create something unique, innovative and funny. What we didn’t expect is that Daisy had other things on her mind that day and she wasn’t as co-operative as we had hoped. The bloopers on the Daisy video were absolutely hilarious and at the time of writing this video has been viewed by over 4,000 people Worldwide and is being viewed by more and more people each day even after the competition has ended! Other funny videos that we did were with the American Football team, the Jazz band, baby Heidi, the salsa dancers and Jedward!! You can see all our videos on our YouTube channel which is called “Tradesmen1“.

How will winning this competition impact your business?

Winning the competition is very important for our business as it gets our name out into the public domain. People will find out how they can receive help if they want to find a tradesman or trade professional. People can discover how they can save time, get a number of quotes and compare prices from rated service providers by simply posting their job on Tradesmen.ie. Gone will be the days of ringing numbers from the phone book and getting no answer, an answering machine, or an answer saying, “sorry can’t do”. The aim of this system is that the customer posts the job and the tradesmen contact them so it saves a lot of time. Reviews from previous clients help customers when deciding which tradesman to use.

On a wider scale it is hoped that the software that is used to drive Tradesmen.ie can be used further afield to benefit people in other countries and that it can be used to bring in much needed revenue into Ireland from overseas. At present our business provides highly skilled jobs in the areas of web application development, digital media and accounts. Our hope is that more highly skilled jobs like these can be created as a result of this increased exposure and that this will be a benefit to the Irish economy as a whole.
