You may wish to replace your windows or doors if they are drafty, damaged, outdated, or if if they are not up to the current building standards or let in noise from outside.  Or you may just not like the look of your old windows:-)

With that in mind, recently we carried out a quick window and door prices survey with some window companies on Tradesmen.ie.  They were asked to price 2 external pvc doors, front and back and 7 average size pvc windows.  All windows to have a u-value* of 1.3.  We also asked them for some tips on getting the best job done.  Here are some of the replies we got below:-

For anyone who has a plot of suitable land, they may wish to build a new house instead of buying an existing house. The advantages with building a new house is that you can build it to your own unique requirements in terms of design and size subject to the planning laws.

A while ago we carried out a new build house cost survey with some tradesmen on Tradesmen.ie. In our survey, the question was how much would it cost excluding VAT to build a 150 m2 new house ready to furnish? An architect’s skillset covers a variety of areas, ranging from construction materials and techniques to landscaping design, ergonomics and law. This diversity of skills allows an architect to conceptualise many design options while analysing a wide range of requirements and restrictions.

Insulating your home is a great way to seal up leaks, reduce heat loss and save money on your heating bills.  Insulating your home can start with very low cost measures such as draft proofing windows, doors and chimneys.  Or you can spend a bit more and insulate walls and attic and replace windows and doors etc.  In our own home we used secondary glazing on windows which worked well.

Electricians provide a range of electrical services including the installation, commissioning, testing and maintenance of various wiring systems and services in domestic, commercial and industrial applications. Their work ranges from wiring domestic houses and retail units, to more complex systems involving process control and maintenance in industrial plants, factories and hospitals.

Lately we did a survey of electrical callout charges and prices with some electricians and electrical contractors on our website.
