Interview with Carpenter in Dublin

If you are planning to do up your home and are in search for a carpenter, you will certainly wish for a high quality one. Carpenters who have a passion for their trade, pay attention to small details and work to your needs are normally the most successful. No matter what the job is, if you are paying money for a service, it should be carried out the way you want and deserve it.

When you are getting a job done, make sure you know the specific details of it so you can find a carpenter who has the relevant experience and is qualified to carry out the work.

Recently, we caught up with one of our Top Rated Tradesmen on Tradesmen.ie, Pat McManamon, for a few questions, who does some carpentry works.

He believes the most important skills a carpenter should have are “The ability to use his tools, to be capable of hanging doors and other carpentry work as well as stair cases, banisters, etc.”

We also asked, were there different carpenters for different jobs or are they all skilled to do all carpentry work, “Well, naturally some are better than others, but they should be able to do most of the work if they are qualified as carpenters.

When it came to building furniture, Pat felt that, “Furniture is not that practical to manufacture anymore, as you would buy furniture now, you can buy kitchens and wardrobes now and its only a matter of installing them.” He also stated that “Hard woods naturally would be better than anything, which would be for doors and door frames, if it is for flooring, it would be softer timber that would be used.”

Thanks a million to Pat McManamon, one of our Top Rated Tradesmen, for his time and a great interview. This interview was recorded and can be heard here.

A good thing when choosing a carpenter is that you have the chance to view their work. Ask for references, pictures, or a contact number of previous customers. Feel free to get in touch with these customers as they can give you some good information on the carpenters skill which may help guide you when making your final decision.

Once you have a number of carpenters ready to quote for your job. Compare how much each of them are charging and don’t be afraid to ask questions about any other concerns you have. Ask how long it will take to complete the job and again compare with the rest.

What do you think are the most important skills for a carpenter to have?

Thanks again to Pat McManamon for answering our questions and we wish him all the best in the future.

Snag List Services in Ireland and Advice

When buying your new home, you expect to receive it finished to a high standard. But often many houses are not completed as good as they should, which is unfair for the paying customer.

It is advised that you carry out a Snag List examination before the deal is finalised. This will help you avoid moving into a house that may still need some more work done or is not up to standard. A Snag List will guarantee that a builder completes all their duties by providing you with a fully completed house that also matches any regulations.

The process normally involves a person carrying out a thorough check on the property. The list accompanied with a number of images of any flawed labour is then sent to both the customer and builder. The builder then should put right all the faults and your house will be of the quality level you want and deserve.

This is an example of a standard snagging list.

Have you any experience in the past with Snag Lists?

If you need someone to carry out a Snag List or any other tradesman for a job you have in mind, check out Tradesmen.ie where you can get a number of quotes for your job.

College Students: How to Save Electricity

If your in College and living off-campus, saving electricity is a must. It can make a big difference and it doesn’t take much to save those extra few euros. Here a couple of things you should try out . . .

  1. Don’t leave lights on when you don’t need to. This is pretty obvious but yet it is one of the most common faults students make. Just turn off the switch and you’ll be saving a lot of watts of power.
  2. Try to use natural light, especially on longer days. Leave the curtains open for that extra while longer to save using electricity on lights or if studying you should use the library. It will save you using your electricity and help you study in the meantime. Its a win-win situation.
  3. Turn off the immersion when you are finished. When heating up water to take a shower or bath, turn it off immediately when you are finished and try to avoid leaving it on for hours prior to using it. It only takes approximately 30 minutes or so for the water to heat up.
  4. Don’t leave your fridge open. On those early mornings for lectures, many students don’t even realize that they left the fridge door open. After a quick cup of tea or a bowl or cereal, its out the door to class, but try check that the fridge door is fully closed before you leave.
  5. Try to avoid using heaters in your room. Although it may be very cold at night, especially coming into the winter months, electric heaters use a lot of electricity. Maybe try bringing a hot-water bottle to bed instead, or wear an extra layer of clothing.
  6. If you happen to accidentally break a light-bulb, be sure to replace it but try those energy saving and energy efficient light-bulbs, they do actually work and are not that expensive either.
  7. Try not to leave the heating on in the house when you are not there. During the day when you are at class, set the timer on your heating so that it does not come on. You can then preset the times you want the heating on and have the house nice and warm for you after a long hard day in College.

Winter Garden Tips with Tradesmen.ie

As the weather is becoming colder, the thoughts of winter may be creeping in and maybe this is a good time to prepare your garden for the cold season. Although not too much activity goes on in the garden during the winter, it is still vital to take care and protect your plants from the freezing weather.

Having a list can help you stay on top of things and remind you of the what jobs have to be done and which are the most important.

It may be a good idea to plan which plants you wish to plant in spring and remove any plants to make room or plants that you know will not survive the harsh winter conditions. If you do want to plant some new plants now, be sure that they are sturdy and are capable of lasting through the cold. It is also a good to remove any weeds and dead leaves as there is a chance that some of these may hold infections or insects that could damage your garden.

Be sure to water plants also. Many people do not, as they believe there is enough moisture during the season to support plants or that some water may freeze and harm them. What you should do is water the soil of the plant as this way the water can seep down and feed the roots. Mulch also works well to keep plants warm by spreading a layer of it over your garden or plants, this should help them survive throughout the winter, as well with a bit of TLC. 🙂

House of the Future

As I was surfing the web, I stumbled upon something quite interesting, known as the home of the future. It seems that some intuitive and fresh thinking people are always coming up with ideas to help ease the way we live.

The thoughts of being able to control the entire house from one central area is just one of the many possibilities that will be among us sooner rather than later.

Although it will make a life easier and a lot more pleasant, something as technologically advanced as these systems won’t come cheap just yet. However, it is defiently something that a lot of people will be looking forward to see in the future and hopefully installed in their own future homes.

What do you think? Is the age of ‘The Jetsons’ almost among us?

If the House of the Future is not for you at present, you could revamp your own home and I’m sure there are plenty of tradesmen at Tradesmen.ie that would be more than happy to help you.

Check out this video here. This is one of my favourite examples of the home of the future brought to life. With this example, the possibilities are endless. There is a stove/cooker that can recommend a number of recipes, walls that have the ability to change colour and a rather cool large looking iPod table.

Here is another very good example . . .

Feel free to share and comment,

All the best,

Daniel Beere

Water Shortage, what to do . . .

Water Shortage, what to do

The rain has come but with all this nice weather that we’ve had lately there may be water shortages ahead this Summer. In the future our water will be metered so this might be a good chance to look at water conservation and how we can play our part to conserve water in our home or business. There are many techniques and devices to help conserve water, such as greywater reuse, for example here is a low tech example,

Water can be conserved by using water-conserving landscaping and irrigation practices, the installation of low-flow fixtures and appliances such as this one (here’s another job for the plumber 🙂

Water users can also conserve water through some common-sense strategies in the home. These are known as “Wise Water Use” methods and include taking shorter showers, taking baths instead of showers, running only full loads of laundry and dishes, and being prompt in repairing leaky plumbing.
